We all have beliefs and these beliefs are the invisible foundations to what we build our lives on and it is so important to understand that it is our limiting beliefs that hold us back from being, doing and creating the lives that we truly want.
Let me explain what I mean.
I have always been fascinated by animals in the wild or at least seeing them free in their natural habitat. Horses running wild, birds heading off to hotter climates when temperatures drop and seeing wildlife on safari. Animals being authentic within their own environment always felt very liberating to me.
One day when I was a child, I visited the circus and it was there I saw a fully grown powerful elephant performing. Suddenly, when a loosely tied rope was placed around its ankle it stopped performing, stood still and waited for its next command – no sign of trying to break free from the rope or running for the hills!?
It always stuck in my mind to question why that strong, huge and capable elephant automatically stopped and did not try to get out of the rope or run for it and fight for freedom and the life it knew it was born for?
When I asked my Dad he told me it was because the elephant had been trained but this never really satisfied ‘why’.
It wasn’t until I learnt about limiting beliefs that I understood what had happened to that elephant and it really did bring home to me how we can all be conditioned at such a young age and stay limited if we stop challenging ourselves from stepping into our discomfort zone or facing our fears.
You see, when that elephant first came to the circus as a baby, it did try to break free may times over, so a rope was placed round its ankle and no matter how hard that elephant fought for its freedom, the rope was fully restricting because at that time the rope was stronger! The elephant knew at that time it was stuck in that situation but sadly had accepted it forever more.
This was when a limiting belief was set in the mind of the elephant. He believed there was no point fighting or even trying, never realising that he had grown bigger and could escape the rope in an instant! The rope was no restriction to him physically anymore, only mentally.
Like the elephants, many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed once before. I know I certainly have in the past so to keep bettering myself, I consciously do something regular that makes me feel emotionally uncomfortable to ensure I keep growing.
Are you being held back by an outdated belief that no longer serves you?
Do you avoid trying something new because of fear or even worse – are you being held back by someone else’s limiting beliefs?!?
My advice? if you feel stuck, unhappy or unfulfilled, I would take a wild guess that the answer is yes.
