Mindfulness is active individual awareness that aims to extend a heightened mental attitude into every day life, being conscious of thoughts and feelings in the moment and focused on being in the now.
It is a personal and profession strategy to improve cognitive function and can be highly productive in the workplace when offered to both front line staff and leaders as it has the potential to reduce stress, anxiety and conflict, whilst increasing resilience, performance, compassion for others with greater flexibility and improved emotional intelligence to name a few.
Mindfulness can be brought into any situation and can be carried out with eyes open or closed.
Simply put, it is a process that when used as a daily practice, can allow individuals to consider an alternative perspective and move away from default programming, rather than acting on old impulse or in irrational, unconscious ways.
Mindfulness and meditation practices enhance each other: mindfulness supports and enriches meditation, while meditation nurtures and expands mindfulness. The main difference being, where mindfulness can be applied to any situation throughout the day, meditation is usually practiced for a specific amount of time.
