Emotional resilience is having the ability to bounce back from adversity, feeling stronger with new thinking, enabling you to bring about the outcome you want and be back in natural control of your mind, feelings and behavior.
When something happens to you that is challenging and creates stress, how do you react?
What is your programmed thought, feeling and behavior?
When hardship and overwhelm arises, does it feel intense, do negative thoughts begin to repeat and do your emotions feel like they are spiraling out of control? Do you behave in a way that afterwards when the dust has settled, you feel unprofessional or unapproachable??
We have all done it but when we become mindful, we bring to the front of awareness the characteristics inside of us that are authentic, enabling resilience to become second nature.
Breaking Your Unhelpful Thought Pattern
When you feel the stress response kick in or you find yourself getting frustrated, this is the time to STOP, detach from the situation with an intervention and give yourself space to see the bigger picture.
Intervene with taking time out to breathe, walk away and ask yourself, how will the response you want to give impact the bigger picture?
Will your actions influence things positively or will your response create upset and further drama?
For me, mediation and mindfulness has proven invaluable to my personal and professional development. Acknowledging daily what I am thinking and how I am feeling, even though sometimes the response I want to give is not helpful, I always give myself the respect of acknowledging how I feel.
How we feel can never be wrong and no one can ever tell you how you feel is wrong because who holds the rule book and according to who?
However, how we chose to behave can be life changing! We can never take back actions or the words we speak and words are powerful – think about it, spelling is not called “spelling” for no reason!
Preparing for what you can do as an emotional intervention if unhelpful situations arise, will serve you well.
Meditation and mindfulness gives me the ability to think clear and deal with what may impact me in a calm and productive manner so meaningful relationships are not unnecessarily broken and I continue to have congruence in my decisions and happiness.
The link below provides a study on the power of mindfulness and states “mindful people can cope with difficult thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed”.
